DENVER – Two MSU Denver tennis players will wrap up their home careers Sunday during Senior Day.
Honored following the 10 a.m. match against Schreiner (Texas) at the Assembly Athletic Complex will be
Gala Castello for the women and
Kacey Walisundara for the men.
"It's a great chance to recognize players who have given back to the program," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said. "The day is about them. So hopefully the guys and gals come ready to go and do it for Gala and Kacey, and hopefully get the win for them."
Castello, in her third year in the program after transferring from North Greenville (S.C.), has fashioned outstanding records of 25-22 in singles and 32-16 in doubles as a Roadrunner. Her doubles winning percentage (.667) ranks eighth in program history. This season she is 5-7 in singles and 10-3 in doubles.
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Castello doesn't plan to use the NCAA's COVID exception for another extra season of eligibility.
"Gala was one of my first recruits," Graetz said. "She's just won a lot of matches for us. She's a team captain who leads by example. She's gritty and feisty on the court."
Walisundara, a hometown player who joined the program as a walk-on in 2018, hasn't been able to crack the regular lineup during his career but owns four career singles wins and nine more in doubles.
"Kacey is the last remaining player I played with," said Graetz, who became the program's coach shortly after graduating. "He's a kid who has given everything for the program. He's loved by the guys and is a great guy to have on the courts."
Senior Day caps a big weekend that also includes a Friday trip to Colorado Mesa for what could be key duals relating to qualification and seeding for the Pacific West Conference Tournament.
MSU Denver defeated the Mavericks at home last week – the men won 6-1 while the short-handed women picked up a 4-3 victory.
"It's always tougher there," Graetz said. "They usually have a pretty good crowd. It usually gets pretty loud and feisty. Both teams will have to be ready to battle because it'll be tough."
