Box Score 2 DENVER – The MSU Denver doubles duo of
Jeanloup Auzias and
Billy McDermott won the A doubles title in a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker Sunday to wrap up a marathon weekend of tennis at the MSU Denver Invitational.
"Jeanloup and Billy were playing together for the first time consistently and they really jelled well," MSU Denver coach
Josh Graetz said.
Auzias/McDermott defeated Luke Wolf/Jack Brown of Air Force 6-3 and Tyler Landen/William Leschig of Colorado Mesa 6-2 before earning the championship win over Phillip Deaton and Justin Waldman of Air Force.
The Roadrunners had plenty of outstanding results across the board.
Juho Kantola made the men's A final, losing to Waldman 6-1, 6-4. Waldman had outlasted Auzias in the semifinals in a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (15-13) marathon.
Isabel Heras made the women's A final, where she was defeated by Colorado Mesa's Makenna Livingston 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Five of the eight quarterfinalists, and three of the four semifinalists, in the women's A draw were Roadrunners, with
Lilly Stienemeier and
Kambra Roles also making the final four. Only Livingston's super-set win over
Kinsey Fields prevented an all-Roadrunner semifinal round.
Heras and partner Fields also made the A final in doubles, though that match – like several others – wasn't played. The two-day tournament was pushed behind schedule due to rain throughout the day Saturday and not all matches were played due to time.
Another match that wasn't played was the men's B final, which would have included McDermott.
Monica Guarin made it to the final in the B backdraw, though that match also wasn't played.
The women's B draw was played to its conclusion and the final included
Marie Cool, who was defeated 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) by Kristen Thomas of Colorado Mesa.
"Both of our teams played a lot of matches over the weekend, and we have some tired players, both mentally and physically," Graetz said. "We needed this heading into our dual matches next week. Overall, it was a very positive tournament for us."
