GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Despite giving up six strokes to par over the final two holes, MSU Denver still turned in a strong second day at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella women's golf tournament.
Led by
Vaijayanti Bharkhada's round of 1-over par 73 and a 5-over 77 by
Winnie Shaw, the Roadrunners finished the day at 19-over 307 – an 11-stroke improvement from Monday's first round and tied for the eighth-best round of the day in the 15-team tournament.
The Roadrunners had four golfers break 80, as
Mackenzie Carpenter carded a 78 and
Isabel Botero shot 79.
"We saw much better shots and course management from the girls today, and aside from just a few holes we played really solid," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said.
MSU Denver finished 12
th overall at 318-307-625.
Bharkhada had three birdies in a six-hole stretch midway through her round and finished the tournament tied for 16
th at 5-over.
"V played great and started to make some putts," Ferguson said. "She will have a really solid year."
Carpenter, who had three sub-80 rounds in 20 tries last season, made it two-for-two this year by following up Monday's season-opening 79 with Tuesday's 78. Her two-day total of 157 tied for 42
nd in the 84-player field.
"Mack overall played great this week," Ferguson said. "If you take out just a couple of holes she was right there with V. I'm really proud of how she hung in there."
