LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Led by
Sydney Eye's 7-over-par 79, the MSU Denver women's golf team stands in second place after the first day of the Southwest Minnesota State Spring Classic.
The Roadrunners compiled a team score of 33-over 321 and stand 10 strokes behind Division I Lehigh and one stroke ahead of Division I Bucknell on the leaderboard heading into Tuesday's final day.
"I think we can make a good run tomorrow if we can just minimize the mental mistakes," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said.
Eye had four birdies while shooting 40-39-79 and is tied for seventh in the eight-team, 55-player event. Eye is third among Division II players in the field.
"I'm super proud of Syd for how she hung tough today," Ferguson said. "She had a lot of ups and downs, but stayed steady and shot a decent score. The team had a lot of good birdies and we saw some great stuff from all of them."
Mackenzie Carpenter and
Isabel Botero each shot 80 and are tied for 10
th, while
Winnie Shaw carded an 82 and is tied for 15
th.
"Overall we really struggled on the par 3s – of the four scores we took, we were +22 on the par 3s and that just killed us," Ferguson said. "We expected some rust for this first day but need to tighten up for tomorrow."
