@MSUDenverWGOLF: Roadrunners Tie for Third at Spring Classic

Botero, Eye tie for sixth among individuals

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Isabel Botero and Sydney Eye each finished tied for sixth and the MSU Denver women finished tied for third at the Southwest Minnesota State Spring Classic golf tournament completed Tuesday.

Botero turned in her fourth birdie of the day on the 18th hole to complete a round of 5-over-par 77, putting her at 13-over 157 for the two-day, two-round tournament. Eye, who had an eagle on the 425-yard, par-5 eighth hole, shot 6-over 78 on Tuesday.

Both Botero and Eye tied for second among Division II players in the 55-player field.

"I'm really happy for Syd and Isa," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "They both had strong top-10 finishes. Syd was solid all day, with an eagle and just a ton of good shots, and Isa finished so well on a stretch of tough holes."

Vaijayanti Bharkhada bounced back from her opening-round 84 with a 6-over 78 of her own to finish tied for 14th at 162, and Winnie Shaw had an eagle on the 350-yard, par-4 seventh hole while finishing with an 83 to place tied for 20th at 165. Like Botero, Bharkhada and Shaw also birdied 18. Bharkhada was 1-over on the back nine, while Botero was 2-over.

The Roadrunners shot 321-316-637 for the tournament and finished behind only Division I teams from Lehigh (614) and Bucknell (636). MSU Denver challenged for first place, then bounced back and forth between second and third place with Bucknell before finally settling in for a tie for third with UCCS.

MSU Denver was in position to have a four-player score of 11-over par on the front nine before counting 18-over on the back (and ultimately 12-over on the front nine).

"Overall it was a bit disappointing to finish third – we were three shots off the lead at the turn and really struggled on the second nine," Ferguson said. "We got beat by two Division I schools, but really could have beaten them."

MSU Denver is back in action Monday at the two-day Pack Classic at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo.
