PUEBLO, Colo. – MSU Denver's Nick Nowlen ran an outstanding early-season time in the 800 meters on Saturday, leading the Roadrunners at the Spank Blasing Invitational.
Nowlen placed third, and second among Division II competitors, in 1 minute, 52.11 seconds. The provisional qualifying time for indoor nationals is 1:51.48, and with the conversion for altitude, Nowlen is within reach of hitting that mark.
Hurdlers Maya Ries and Anthony Martinez were also among MSU Denver's stars on Saturday.
Ries ran her second-fastest time ever, which is also the second-fastest in program history, in the women's 100 hurdles, finishing fourth in 14.43 seconds.
Martinez was sixth in the men's 110 hurdles in a wind-aided 14.57, a career best that improves his status as the second-fastest ever in the event at MSU Denver. Martinez also ran the 100, and clocked 11.02 while finishing 11th.
Also faring well in two events were women's sprinters Claire Hummel and Jessica Hobson.
Hummel was third in the 200 (second among Division II competitors) in 25.91 and placed eighth in the 100 in 12.26. Hobson was 12th in both the 100 (12.48) and 200 (26.01).
Jaivion Lattimore finished just ahead of Hummel, in seventh, in the 100 with a wind-aided 12.23.
Hummel, Hobson and Lattimore were three-fourths of the 4x100 relay that also included Teagan Garand that moved into second on the school's annual list and tied for the fifth-fastest time in the event in program history by finishing second in 48.59.
Also of note Saturday, Noel Lopez turned in a solid time in the 5,000 of 15:16.36 while placing fourth, and Ethan Loper was sixth in the 200 in 21.95.
