TEMECULA, Calif. – The MSU Denver women's golf team steadied itself after a tough start Monday and stands in sixth place after the first day of the San Marcos Shootout.
Vaijayanti Bharkhada is tied for third individually after shooting a 2-over-par 74, while
Isabel Botero is tied for 13
th after shooting 77 and capping her round with a birdie-3 on the 18
th hole.
Bharkhada is two strokes out of first place.
"V played an awesome round today," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "Isa had a great finish, too. We needed that birdie from her!"
The Roadrunners finished at 27-over 315 and are only three strokes behind third-place host Cal State San Marcos, the 8
th-ranked team in Division II. Saint Martin's (Wash.) is fourth at 313, and Lubbock Christian is fifth at 314.
Playing her home course, the 6,081-yard Temecula Creek Inn,
Mackenzie Carpenter overcame a triple bogey on the first hole to finish at 9-over, tied for 33
rd place.
Sydney Eye is tied for 40
th at 11-over.
As a team, Roadrunners' four scoring players shot 11-over on the back nine.
"The course played tough with all of the rain they have had here," Ferguson said. "The rough is super thick and unpredictable. We are in a good spot going into tomorrow, we just need to tighten things up and, as usual, eliminate the big numbers."
