@RoadrunnerSB: MSU Denver Rolls to Doubleheader Sweep

Roadrunners move back into second place in the RMAC

DENVER – After a difficult speed bump against quality teams, MSU Denver started rolling again against another of the league's best on Sunday, sweeping Regis, 5-1 and 9-1, in road doubleheader.

"After a rough stretch, it was really nice to have a day where we were able to put things together," MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "Solid pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense. Nothing special, but consistent performances.

"We played really composed and maturely which is something we've talked about as a team."

Despite having lost eight of nine games prior to Sunday, the doubleheader sweep vaulted MSU Denver from fourth place to second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings as it improved to 28-19 overall and 24-12 in the league. Regis is in third place at 25-13, while Colorado Mesa is fourth at 24-15.

In the opener, Jaden Geist hit a two-run homer in the second inning, and Jenna Medhus hit a three-run shot in the third to give the Roadrunners more than enough cushion.

Audrey Burt (6-10) pitched a complete game, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.

After going 2-for-3 in the opener, Medhus (11-4) was the winning pitcher in the second game after working 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, three-hit relief.

"We got really good pitching performances from Audrey and Jenna," Van Wetzinga said. "They were efficient and let our defense make plays. And our defense, especially our left side of the infield, was really solid."

Geist drove in the go-ahead run with a single for a 2-1 lead for the second run of a four-run fourth inning. Medhus later added an RBI double. Kami Grammerstorf was 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, and Miah Hartivgsen had two hits and two RBIs.

The teams wrap up the series with a doubleheader Monday at noon.
