BOULDER CITY, Nev. – MSU Denver, and the rest of the tournament field, fell victim to high winds on Tuesday at the final round of the RMAC Championship.
Vaijayanti Bharkhada, after shooting 73 each of the first two days, still managed to tie for seventh overall despite shooting 11-over 83 on a day when no one in the tournament field shot better than 74, and only 11 players shot under 80.
"V had a top 10 (finish) which was great," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "She stayed steady all week. I know she didn't have the finish she wanted, but she had a great first year here and will have a wonderful future."
After compiling a four-player score of 307 Sunday and 312 Monday, MSU Denver battled the elements while finishing at 330 Tuesday – still the sixth-best score of the day. The Roadrunners finished sixth overall at 949.
"Today was a tough one," Ferguson said. "We struggled to start, and then just never got back on track mentally, unfortunately. I think there was a lot of emotions and we didn't handle them as well as we could have.
"This team played such a solid spring, so I wish it could have ended better for them. But I hope it doesn't overshadow that we moved up almost 30 spots in the golf rankings and beat some very good teams."
Sydney Eye shot 80 on Tuesday for MSU Denver's best score and finished tied for 21
st in the tournament at 21-over.
Mackenzie Carpenter tied for 29
th at 29-over, senior
Winnie Shaw tied for 32
nd at 30-over, and
Isabel Botero tied for 34
th at 31-over.
"I want to thank Winnie for all she has done at MSU Denver," Ferguson said. "She has been a tremendous asset to our team, to the athletic department and to the entire university. This tournament wasn't how she wanted to finish score-wise, but she has left a lasting legacy on our program and the university and she will do great things in her future!"
