GOLDEN, Colo. – MSU Denver salvaged the final game of its four-game softball series with Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, bouncing back from a 4-3, nine-inning loss in the opening game to earn a 6-3 victory in the finale.
"Our pitching was better today and we gave ourselves more opportunities to score but after being in the hole after yesterday, but it wasn't enough to even up the series," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "We were lucky to get the last game. We were able to get on the board early in game two, and we held on to grab a win to end the weekend."
MSU Denver (26-15 overall, 22-8 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored two runs in each of the first two innings of the second game to take control.
Jaiden Geist delivered a two-run single in the first inning, while a
Hannah DiFabio groundout and a triple by
Alexia Boring produced the second-inning runs.
Jenna Medhus (10-3) earned the complete-game victory, allowing three runs on six hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. Mines scored a single run in the fifth and had two in the seventh before the rally was quashed.
Mines scored two seventh-inning runs to extend the opener to extra innings, then eventually won it in the ninth.
MSU Denver had scored two in the first as Boring drove in a run with a triple and then scored on a passed ball. Geist added an RBI double in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-1.
After losing three of four for the weekend, the Roadrunners dropped to third place in the RMAC a half-game behind Colorado Mesa (23-8).
"Credit to Mines," Van Wetzinga said. "They were scrappy all weekend and their offense consistently put the ball in play and pressured us to make plays with their speed on the bases."
