Title IX Series: Friot's Contributions Recognized Annually

Roadrunners supporter served as faculty athletics representative

DENVER – MSU Denver has for decades been a leader in providing equal opportunities for women in intercollegiate athletics.

Today is the 51st installment of a 52-part tribute by Roadrunners Athletics to pioneers and leaders in intercollegiate athletics at MSU Denver. The series coincides with the passage of Title IX.

Each Thursday, a key female figure in Roadrunners athletics history will be recognized.

Today, professor Dr. Elizabeth Friot is featured.

Dr. Friot has been recognized as a major supporter of Roadrunner athletics for many years. She began her MSU Denver career as a professor of secondary education in 1970. She served as the athletics program's Faculty Athletics Representative, and was a member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Board.

Friot earned a Distinguished Service Award from MSU Denver in 1993-94 and served on the institution's 45th Anniversary History Committee. She also served on the Faculty Advisory Committee to the Trustees and was appointed chair for two separate terms. Friot has also been a member of the Colorado Education Association and served on the Higher Education Advisory Council. She was the president of the Faculty Senate.

Frio was inducted into the Roadrunners' Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Each April at MSU Denver's Rowdy Awards banquet, Roadrunners Athletics presents the Friot Award to an outstanding faculty member who goes above and beyond to serve athletics on campus.

Title IX, the groundbreaking law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools that receive funding from the federal government, went into effect just over 50 years ago – on June 23, 1972.
