COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado College Invitational tennis tournament was ended early Sunday due to rain, but not before
Emily Hafner won the women's A Draw singles title.
Hafner, a senior who transferred to MSU Denver for her final season of competition defeated Issy Coman of Colorado Mesa 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals and Emma Petton of Seward County Community College (Kan.) 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
"Emily had an amazing weekend, beating tough opponents and playing super smart," MSU Denver coach
Bruno Campos said. "Her dedication, skill, and determination have paid off in the most remarkable way."
Also advancing to the final, in the women's B Draw, was the Roadrunners'
Kambra Roles. Roles defeated Lara Torres Baron of Seward County 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) in the semifinals, but the final wasn't played.
"Kambra is still a sophomore and she loves the game," Campos said. "She had some good wins over the weekend, and I hope she keeps that fighting spirit alive. I am sure she will go even further in the near future."
On the men's side,
Juho Kantola lost to Michael Choi of Air Force 6-2, 6-4 in the A semifinals.
"It was a very positive weekend for us, as a team and family," Campos said. "We had so many competitive matches, played some high-level tennis and we learned so much. The team showed incredible teamwork, determination, and skill on the tennis court. I am proud of them. The future is bright and we will keep working hard.
"This is just the beginning of the year and we will be back stronger."
