@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners battle to 0-0 tie with Fort Lewis in regular season home finale

Defense records his 13th shutout on the season

DENVER – The women's soccer team battled 90 minutes with Fort Lewis on Sunday afternoon, but neither team found the back of the net in the 0-0 tie.

The draw puts MSU Denver at 9-3-5 overall and 8-2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. It puts the Skyhawks at 7-5-4 overall and 4-4-3 in the RMAC.

"Fort Lewis is a good team," Head coach Kat Mertz said. "They have some special players. We knew they were going to be tricky in the midfield. I really thought our players executed the game plan well and at the end of the day, we just needed to find a way to score. And at the end of the day, you win games by scoring."

The shutout was the 13th for the Roadrunners defense this year. Even with starting goalkeeper Kylie Bach on the sidelines for six minutes due to an injury, MSU Denver was able to keep the Skyhawks from scoring. FLC came in as the fourth highest scoring team in the conference having scored 28 goals coming into the contest.

"I thought our team defending, as always, was really on point," Mertz said.

"It is so special," Senior defender Cam Castelan said about her team's defensive effort. "We want to get Kylie (Bach) to the shutout record and just doing everything we can to get her to that goal."

Bach currently sits third in program history with 27 career shutouts and sits with 11 clean sheets this season, which places her tied for fifth place all-time. Mandy Allen has the single season record with 17 in 2003 and owns the record for career shutouts with 37.

The Roadrunners outshot Fort Lewis 13 to 8, with both teams putting three of their shots on frame. Tessa Killmon, Nicole Thompson and Taryn O'Brien all put shots on goal. Head coach Kat Mertz was happy with what she saw from the offense today.

"I thought our offense was really dangerous," Mertz said. "I thought we got in-line, we got a lot of services in the box. I thought we got around them, we got numbers in the box and we were pretty threatening in that regard."

It was also Senior Day for seven Roadrunners, as the squad honored Taryn O'Brien, Tess Bretschneider, Cam Castelan, Emily Sirois, Tess Killmon, Kylie Bach and Maddy Rueter

"It's really special," Castelan said on celebrating next to those players before the game. "I transferred in here and I wasn't coming here thinking I was going to find such a family and they have become my sisters.

The Roadrunners will next head to Lakewood on Wednesday to take on Colorado Christian to finish out the regular season. MSU Denver currently sits in the third spot of the RMAC standings and are hoping to secure a home playoff game next Sunday.

"We have been working for that all season," Castelan said. "It's been one of our goals since spring last year. And we don't lose all home."
