@MSUDenverWBB: Roadrunners Pick Up Rare Second Straight Road Victory

MSU Denver gaining confidence, momentum

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – Don't look now, but one of the hottest teams in RMAC women's basketball is MSU Denver.

The Roadrunners followed up their 86-82 overtime win Friday at then-fourth place Adams State with a 61-55 victory Saturday at seventh-place Fort Lewis, becoming the first RMAC team in six attempts this season to pick up victories at both locations on the same weekend.

It's the first time in 10 tries since 2005-06 that MSU Denver had swept Adams State and Fort Lewis in back-to-back road games.

The Roadrunners, who had lost five straight and 10 of 11 before the weekend started, are now 5-14 overall and 4-10 and tied for 11th in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. With eight games left, MSU Denver is three games out of eighth place – the league's top eight teams advance to the RMAC Tournament.

"It's amazing that we did this," MSU Denver coach Tanya Haave said. "But we did. We're building some confidence. I'm really happy for the players, and happy they were able to back it up after an overtime win last night. A lot of people helped and contributed."

This time, the final score was about as close as Fort Lewis got as for much of the night MSU Denver played a comfortable lead.

"After the win last night, you could see the confidence it's provided to us," Haave said. "It's a shame we couldn't get over the top earlier in the season. Now the big test for us is to see if we can put together a really good weekend at home.

"It's great to see them rewarded for their hard work and staying with it. It was getting discouraging, but they stayed with it and broke through this weekend."

And even though Mikayla Espinosa, coming off a 30-point night, was held to three, the rest of the Roadrunners more than picked up the scoring slack.

Brianna Sealy had an impressive double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while guard Ashlyn Yow had 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds and defensive dervish Tosjanae Bonds had eight points, seven rebounds and four steals.

MSU Denver shot just 35.6 percent from the field (21 of 59), but held Fort Lewis to 30.0 percent (18 of 60). The Roadrunners grabbed 15 offensive rebounds while carving out an overall advantage of 51-33 on the boards. And they cut their turnovers in half from Friday's wild victory, with 18 giveaways.

"I was concerned about our legs after playing overtime last night, but we hit just enough shots, took care of it just well enough, and they didn't hit shots against us," Haave said.
