PUEBLO, Colo. – MSU Denver overcame multi-run deficits in each game and upped its school-record winning streak to 21 games Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at CSU Pueblo 14-6 and 6-5.
"Well, it's not the way we envisioned two wins, and it certainly wasn't pretty, but this team has fight and they respond when they're challenged," MSU Denver coach
Annie Van Wetzinga said. "I'm proud of them for that."
MSU Denver improved to 25-5 overall and 18-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Kami Grammerstorf stole three bases in the opening game to take over the program's all-time lead with 78 for her career, breaking a tie with Colissa Bakovich (2014-17) at 75. The Roadrunners also had an RMAC-record total of 11 stolen bases, including nine in the final three innings. The school record for steals in a game is 15, set in 1990 when MSU Denver played as an independent.
Jenna Medhus homered in both games, drove in five runs, and was the winning pitcher in the opener,
Shelby Robb extended her hitting streak to 16 games while going 5-for-9,
Miah Hartvigsen was 5-for-7 with five RBIs and
Natalie Romero pitched five relief innings without allowing an earned run to get the save in the opener and the win in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Roadrunners trailed 4-1 after 1 ½ innings, but stormed back to tie the game 5-5 in the third, then took over with five runs in the fifth to go ahead to stay.
Hartvigsen's sacrifice fly gave MSU Denver a 6-5 lead, then Medhus followed with a home run that was part of a 3-for-5 game.
Aaliyah Arellano, who was 3-for-4, added an RBI double later in the inning.
"Aaliyah and Miah were really consistent today and had big at bats for us, as did Jenna," Van Wetzinga said.
MSU Denver was credited with seven stolen bases in the opening game.
"We ran the bases well, which was a big factor for us, including Kami breaking the school record for career stolen bases, which is cool and well-earned," Van Wetzinga said.
MSU Denver trailed 5-0 in the second game but tied it with five runs in a third inning that included a leadoff homer by
Hannah DiFabio and a game-tying, two-run homer by Medhus. The Roadrunners pushed across the winning run on an error in the top of the seventh.
"Our pitchers had some things not go their way today and I'm happy how they kept competing," Van Wetzinga said. "Tomorrow we need to be sharper defensively and be able to handle their speed better."
The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
