LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – MSU Denver Roadrunners golf turned in a strong performance in the opening round of the SMSU Classic, sitting second out of 10 teams after posting a 310 (+10) on Thursday at the Wigwam Resort.
With three golfers currently inside the top-10 individually, the Roadrunners positioned themselves firmly in contention entering the final round as they chase a team title to close out the tournament.
Leading the way for MSU Denver was junior Izabella Pesicka, who finished the opening round tied for fifth after carding a 76 (+6). Pesicka recorded a 39 on the front nine and bounced back with a steady 37 on the back nine to hold her spot inside the top five heading into the final round. Pesicka just took home RMAC Golfer of the Week honors earlier today.
Just behind her on the leaderboard is teammate Neige Dunn, who sits tied for sixth after posting a 77 (+7) in the first round. Dunn highlighted her round with a pair of birdies on the front nine and added another on the back to stay within striking distance of the leaders.
Lauren Mack also cracked the top-10 for the Roadrunners, finishing the day tied for ninth after shooting a 78 (+8). Mack rebounded from a tough start with several steady holes throughout the round, including a pair of birdies to keep MSU Denver well represented near the top of the standings.
Rounding out the Roadrunners lineup, Sophia Honeyman finished tied for 11th with a 79 (+9), while Jordyn Horsley posted an 81 (+11) to sit tied for 23rd after the opening round.
With three golfers currently positioned inside the top-10, the Roadrunners will look to climb the leaderboard when the tournament concludes Friday at the SMSU Classic.
