PUEBLO, Colo. - The No. 21 Metro State volleyball team completed a perfect weekend with a 25-18, 25-16, 26-24 sweep over Colorado State-Pueblo in Pueblo on Saturday evening. The Roadrunners also enjoyed sweeps at Adams State and Western State on Thursday and Friday to go 3-0 on the weekend. With the win on Saturday, Metro State improved to 16-6 overall and 9-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the ThunderWolves dropped to 6-16 overall and 3-10 in the RMAC.
Amy Watanabe (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) had a career-high in digs for a three-set match with 20, as the Roadrunners held CSUP to just a .045 (28-23-110) hitting percentage. Watanabe had 37 digs in a five-set match earlier this year against UC-Colorado Springs.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) added a match-high 13 kills to go with 11 digs for her fifth double-double this season.
Anna Mapes (Chaska, Minn./Chaska H.S.) also added 10 kills, while
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) had eight in 13 attempts with no errors for a .615 hitting percentage.
The Roadrunners hit .264 (42-13-110) on the evening.
Metro State took control of the first set with an eight-point swing, capped by consecutive service aces by
Amanda Cook (Bellevue, Neb./Bellevue East H.S.) to lead 20-11. The Roadrunners hit .324 (14-2-37) in the first set, while holding the ThunderWolves to just .059 (9-7-34).
A kill by Mapes broke a 12-12 tie in the second set and sparked a four-point run for Metro State. The Roadrunners scored 12 of the next 14 points after the 12-12 tie, including a six-point run to blow open the score. Metro State used six attack errors on CSUP during the 12-2 point swing. As a result, the ThunderWolves were held to a -.081 (7-10-37) hitting percentage in the second set.
The Roadrunners put together one of their most impressive performances of the season to finish off the third set. Trailing 24-21, they fought off set point three times and scored the final five points of the night. The final run was started by a CSU-Pueblo service error and continued with a pair of kills from Morley, including the final point of the night.
Metro State will host Regis on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
