DENVER, Colo. - The No. 6 Metro State women's soccer team did not allow a shot attempt in a 5-0 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at Auraria Field. It was the first time Metro State has held an opponent to zero shot attempts since Aug. 28, 1998, against Montana State-Billings in a 6-0 win, and the third time in school history. With the win, the Roadrunners improved to 11-1-0 overall and 8-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Lopers dropped to 1-10-1 and 0-7-1 in the RMAC.
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) scored three goals for Metro State, including two in the first 25 minutes of the game. It was her third hat trick of the season and fourth of her career. She also attempted a game-high eight shots.
Courtney Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado H.S.) scored her first goal of the season and added her ninth assist on a goal by
Aleah DeGeneres (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.). Ryan entered the weekend 13th in NCAA Division II in assists per game and added two more in two games on Friday and Sunday.
Mays, who has already twice been named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week this season, made strong case to earn it for a third time with five goals and an assist in two games, including two game-winning goals. She leads the conference in goals and points.
Metro State dominated play from the opening whistle, peppering three shots towards the net in the first three minutes of the game and earning a corner kick just a minute-and-a-half into the game. Mays finished her first shot attempt of the day in the 15th minute after dribbling up the right sideline and working her way towards the goal for the shot following a pass from
Hayley Renko (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.). The assist for Renko was the first point of her career.
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) had a shot less than a minute later heading for the net, before a Loper defender stepped in front of the shot at the last second to make the save. McQuilliams and Mays each had another shot on goal in the next two minutes and Ryan's shot in the 20th minute hit the post as the Roadrunners failed to capitalize on scoring chances for the next five minutes after Mays' first goal.
Mays scored again in the 25th minute as she deflected
Kathryn Gosztyla (Orangevale, Calif./Trabuco Hills H.S.)'s free kick from 40 yards away into the net.
DeGeneres added a goal in the 31st minute on another deflection as she finished Ryan's cross from the left side.
UNK goalkeeper Caitlin Golden made three saves in the final five minutes of the first half and four more in the first 10 minutes of the second half before Ryan scored on a free kick in the 62nd minute from 25 yards out, just above the top-right corner of the box.
Mays added her third goal of the game just two minutes later after
Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) crossed it to Mays and Mays dribbled around a defender in the box.
Ryan nearly had her second goal of the day in the 78th minute, but Golden was there for the save. That was the final shot attempt of the game.
Metro State outshot UNK 26-0 and had 20 shots on goal. The 20 shots on goal were the most for the Roadrunners since putting 20 on goal in an 8-0 win over Adams State on Oct. 3, 2008. Metro State also had a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks on Sunday. The last time the Roadrunners had 10 or more corner kicks in a game was Sept. 14 and 16, 2007, when they had an 11-0 advanted on corner kicks in consecutive games against Colorado State-Pueblo and Adams State.
After opening the season with 10 of its first 12 games at home, Metro State will hit the road three straight, beginning at Mesa State on Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
