Metro State Falls in Five in Non-Conference Battle

The No. 18 Metro State volleyball team fell in five sets to Colorado College, 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 15-13 on Tuesday evening in Colorado Springs.  CC entered Tuesday ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division III.  The loss dropped Metro State to 12-5 overall, while the Tigers improved to 18-2 this year.

Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) led both teams with 16 kills and hit .256 (16-6-39).  Anna Mapes (Chaska, Minn./Chaska H.S.) had 11 kills and hit .579 (11-0-19), a career-high hitting percentage.  Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) added 10 kills, but hit -.064 (10-13-47).  Gabe Curtis (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) had 48 assists, seven digs, five blocks and five kills.  Amy Watanabe (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) dug up 20 balls and Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) added 13 digs.

Metro State hit just .176 (57-29-159) for the evening and allowed eight service aces by the Tigers.  Metro State did tie a season high with 12 blocks.  Colorado College hit .128 (49-30-148).

Metro State took the first set, aided by an 8-1 run to break an 11-11 tie.  The Roadrunners hit .200 (15-7-40) in the first set, compared to .032 (7-6-31) by CC.

Colorado College bounced back with a 25-23 win in the second set, using a 14-6 run when the Tigers were trailing 10-6 to take a 20-16 lead.  Metro State hit just .081 (10-7-37) in the second set, its lowest hitting percentage of the night.

The Roadrunners took control in the third set, playing their strongest frame of the night.  They hit .241 (13-6-29) and held CC to .103 (8-5-29).  Trailing 4-3, Metro State scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 12-6 lead.  The Tigers stayed in it, trailing 19-16, but Metro State scored six of the final seven points to close out the set.

The third set was back-and-forth the entire way, but CC pulled out the 25-22 win, hitting .258 (15-7-31), while Metro State connected at .276 (11-3-29).

The Roadrunners took a 13-11 lead in the deciding set, but CC capped the evening with four straight points to earn the victory, with three straight kills from Sarah Schmoker and a kill by Emily Perkins to end the match.

Laura Goldsmith led the Tigers with 14 kills, followed by Schmoker with 11 and Perkins with 10.

Metro State will look to rebound in conference action as it hosts Fort Lewis and Mesa State on Friday and Saturday.  Friday's match begins at 7 p.m. and Saturday is at 5 p.m.
