LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The No. 24 Metro State volleyball team swept Colorado Christian on the road 25-15, 25-12, 25-19 to clinch at least a share of second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division on Saturday evening in Lakewood. The Roadrunners finished the regular season with a record of 21-7 overall and 14-5 in the RMAC, while CCU fell to 5-26 overall and 1-18 in the RMAC.
If No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney can hold off Colorado Mines at home tonight, the Roadrunners will finish in second place by themselves in the RMAC East Division. Metro State has won six of its past seven matches, with its only loss coming at Nebraska-Kearney during that stretch.
Metro State has finished in second place in its division in four of the past five seasons. It won the RMAC overall and East Division regular season championships in 2003.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.),
Gabe Curtis (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.),
Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) and
Anna Mapes (Chaska, Minn./Chaska H.S.) provided a spectacular offensive attack for the Roadrunners on Saturday.
Mapes hit .727 with nine kills and one error in 11 attempts, becoming the first Metro State player to hit over .700 (min. 10 attempts) in a match since Shawna Gilbert hit .737 (14-0-19) on Oct. 31, 2003, against Colorado Mines. Mapes added two blocks on Saturday.
Morley finished with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .355 (15-4-31). She also added seven digs in the contest.
Causseaux was a perfect on the evening with five kills in five attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage. She also had four digs and two blocks.
The whole offensive firepower came through Curtis, who only played in the first two sets. In those two sets, she had 25 assists and four kills, helping the Roadrunners hit .491 (33-6-55) during that time. She rested in the third set as
Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) took over at setter and had seven assists and two blocks.
Amy Watanabe (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) continued her outstanding defense this season with a match-high 11 digs. She also had a season-high four aces.
For the match, Metro State hit .369 (43-12-84) and held the Cougars to just .060 (24-19-83). It was the eighth time this season that Metro State has hit over .300 and the 10th time the Roadrunners have held an opponent under .100.
The Roadrunners hit .536 (18-3-28) in the first set as Morley led the team with seven kills.
The team hit .444 (15-3-27) in the second set, taking control after leading 12-8 with eight consecutive points with Watanabe serving, as she dropped two aces and Causseaux had a pair of kills.
Metro State had difficulty in the third set. Its strong defense held CCU to -.032 (8-9-31) in the set. But the score was tied 18-18 when the Roadrunners finally got going, scoring seven of the final eight points
