DENVER, Colo. - One night after its best defensive performance of the season, Metro State's women's basketball team turned in its best offensive performance, knocking off Montana State-Billings 89-64 on Saturday evening in Denver. The win improved Metro State to 6-4 this season, while MSUB dropped to 5-4.
The 89 points were the most for the Roadrunners since defeating New Mexico Highlands 92-64 on Jan. 17.
Chelsea Williamson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder H.S.) poured in a career-high 23 points, hitting 9-of-12 from the floor, and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) scored a season-high 16 points, connecting on both of her 3-point attempts.
Leandra Sands (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Wilson H.S.) and
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) each scored 13. Sands had five steals, four assists and four rebounds.
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds and scored eight points with six assists and two steals.
The Roadrunners hit 32-of-65 (49.2 percent) from the field and held a 42-31 rebounding advantage. They had 18 offensive boards, leading to 19 second-chance points. Metro State also forced 23 turnovers, which led to 30 points, and held MSUB to 39.7 (23-for-58) percent shooting.
Williamson was a perfect 5-for-5 shooting in the first half as the Roadrunners built a 43-28 halftime lead.
Metro State stretched its lead to 26 at 65-39 with 11 minutes left in the game for its biggest lead of the game, and held on the 25-point win.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Dec. 30 when they face Xavier (La.) at the Surf City Classic in Irvine, Calif.
