Baseball Sweeps MSU-Billings

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Metro State took a pair of games from Montana-State-Billings today at All Star Park, 6-4 and 2-1 to conclude a four game series. With the losses, MSUB falls to 1-3 on the year, while Metro State improves to 6-4.

The Yellowjackets took game one, 8-4, before dropping three straight to the Roadrunners.

In game one on Sunday, Metro State plated five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. A single and a double began the inning for the Roadrunners, followed by a Matt McConnell three run home run. Mike Coffey put down a bunt to sophomore hurler Brian Howe, who couldn't handle it for an error moments later. Jordan Stouffer added the second long ball of the inning for two runs and a 5-4 lead. The Roadrunners added another run off a sacrifice fly in the sixth to take the opener, 6-4.

In the nightcap, Metro State drew first blood as it scored a run in the second off an error. In the top of the third, MSUB evened the score with a RBI single by senior Andrew Hernandez who tried to stretch it into a double but was thrown out to end the threat. Metro State added a sacrifice fly by Stouffer courtesy of two walks and a couple of steals to score Chris Redding for the game winner.

On Saturday, Metro Satte capitalized on three unearned runs in the eighth inning by to break open a 2-2 game as the Roadrunners posted a 5-2 victory over Montana State Billings. Chris Redding hit a two out single, McConnell drove in his third run of the game and a throwing error allowed Redding to score on the play to account for the Roadrunner scoring.

The Yellowjackets didn't go quietly in their last at bat as they got the tying run to the late courtesy of a pass ball strikeout and a walk, but were unable to get anything across.

In Friday's game, Metro State scored the first run of the game as Matt McConnell doubled down the right field line, followed by a RBI single from Mike Coffey for a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

The Yellowjackets rallied in the top of the sixth inning as senior Stefan Malkuch singled up the middle, scoring two runs for a 2-1 lead. MSUB added two more runs in the seventh for a 4-1 lead as junior Matt Schoonover laid down a sacrifice bunt scoring senior Andrew Hernandez. Later in the inning, senior Joe Via doubled to center, scoring Ridgeway.

The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Chris Redding and McConnell hooked up for a double and a RBI single, respectively. Coffey also got into the act with a RBI single, while McConnell later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-4 game. MSUB scored two runs in the eighth and added two more in the ninth to pick up their first win of the season.

Metro State faces College of Santa Fe for a four-game set Feb. 21-22 at All Star Park. The first pitch of each doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
