Metro State Drops Pair to Fort Hays State

The Metro State Softball team (2-2) lost a pair of games to Fort Hays State, 4-3 and 12-7, Sunday afternoon at Auraria Field.

The first game started out as a pitching duel, as the two teams combined for one hit through the first two innings. The Tigers got on the board in the third inning to take an early 1-0 advantage. They added two more in the fourth inning off three hits and added an insurance run in the seventh. Trailing 0-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the 'Runners finally found their bats. Amber Roundtree started the inning with a double to left field and Lauren Hainlen was hit by a pinch to put two on for Molly Clark. Clark blasted a pitch over the center field fence to pull the 'Runners to within one with two out. Kellie Nishikida ended the game with a line drive to first base.

Christie Robinson (1-1) got the loss after going seven innings and only giving up one earned run.

The second game provided a lot more offense as the teams combined for 19 runs and 22 hits. Amber Roundtree and Tara Mickelson both homered for the 'Runners, but the Tigers offense exploded for 14 hits and 12 runs.

Metro State returns to action Friday, Feb. 20th at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference/Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Crossover Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 'Runners face Augustana at 12 p.m. and Minnesota State-Mankato at 3 p.m.
