DENVER, Colo. - Metro State's Jordan Stouffer hit a bases loaded single in the eighth inning of game two to give the Roadrunners an 8-7 victory over New Mexico Highlands after losing game one 10-1. The Roadrunners are now 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cowboys are 11-11 and 5-6 in the RMAC following the doubleheader.
Game 1 New Mexico Highlands starter Gorman Romero was nearly untouchable, throwing all seven innings and surrendering just three hits and one unearned run in the 10-1 loss for Metro State. The righthander struck out seven.
Matt McConnell, Mike Coffey and Dakota Nahm each had singles for the Roadrunners. Joel Lockhart suffered the loss.
Jason Carr led the Cowboys with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a double, a home run and four RBI.
Trailing 10-0, Metro State scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. McConnell led off the inning with the Roadrunners' second hit of the game. He scored three batters later when Tyree Abshire reached on a fielder's choice.
Game 2
Mike Coffey had three hits and Jordan Stouffer had two to lead the offense for the Roadrunners. Dakota Nahm also hit the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Coffey, Nahm and Stouffer each had two RBI. Coffey stole three bases in the game.
Sean Walter earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 perfect innings. Jake Wood suffered the loss for Highlands.
With the score tied 2-2 in the fourth, Metro State took a 6-2 lead with four runs with two outs. Coffey got things started with a two-run single to score Kevin Caughlin and Chris Redding. Coffey then stole second and third, and advanced home on a throwing error on his steal of third base. Stouffer added an RBI double to finish the scoring.
The Cowboys took the lead in the fifth as five consecutive batters reached base with two outs.
Nahm led off the bottom of the seventh with his game-tying blast to left field.
After Weber pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, Tommy Frikken led off with a walk for Metro State. After Highlands walked two more batters, sandwiched around a strikeout, Stouffer delivered with a line drive single to left to win the game.
The two squads will play the final game of the series on Sunday, a nine-inning game beginning at noon at Auraria Field.
