Bats Come Alive In Series Opener

GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State had 17 hits, including six extra-base hits, as it cruised to a 14-7 victory over Colorado School of Mines on Friday night in Golden, Colo. It was just the second time this season that the Roadrunners have won the first game in a four-game series and it gave them 15-11 overall record, including 6-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers dropped to 5-21 overall and 2-11 in the RMAC.

Tyree Abshire had a career-high five hits to lead the offense, including two doubles and a home run. He also drove in five runs. Matt McConnell and Marcel Dominguez each had three hits for the Roadrunners. McConnell has now hit safely in seven consecutive games and 10 of his past 11. Chris Redding and Mike Coffey also had two hits apiece.

Joel Lockhart earned the win, tossing the first seven innings of the game. Sean Walter pitched two shutout innings of relief, while not allowing a hit and striking out four.

The Roadrunners led 1-0 in the top of the first as Redding led off the game reaching on an error and came around to score on a double play later in the inning. The Orediggers tied the game in the bottom of the first.

Metro State briefly led 2-1 in the third when Redding scored again on a ground out by Jordan Stouffer, but Colorado Mines scored two in the bottom of the inning to lead 3-2.

The two teams traded single runs again in the fourth, with Abshire leading off Metro State's half of the inning with a double to right-center and scoring on a double to left-center by Dominguez.

Trailing 4-3, the Roadrunners scored 11 unanswered runs. They scored one in the fifth to tie the game on Abshire's RBI single to score McConnell, but broke the game open in the sixth with five to lead 9-4. Dominguez led off with a single through the left side. Following Tommy Frikken (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.)'s second sacrifice bunt of the game, Redding put Metro State ahead with an infield single after Dominguez had stolen third base.

The Roadrunners added four more unearned runs in the inning, scoring two on a single by Dakota Nahm and one more on a double by Abshire.

Kevin Caughlin scored in the seventh on another double by Dominguez to put Metro State ahead 10-4.

Metro State put the game out of reach in the eighth as Abshire drilled a three-run home run to right-center, his fifth hit in his first five plate appearances of the night.

After Colorado Mines scored three in the bottom of the eighth as its first four batters reached against Lockhart, the Roadrunners threatened to score again after a one-out double by McConnell, but a strike out and a fielder's choice ended the inning.

The two teams will meet for a twin bill on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in Golden.
