GOLDEN, Colo. - Junior righthander Ted Jamison threw a shutout in game one as Metro State's baseball team split a doubleheader with Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., winning game one 6-0, before losing 5-1 in the second game. Metro State is now 16-12 overall and 7-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mines is 6-22 overall and 3-12 in the RMAC.
Game 1: Jamison allowed just three hits and struck out 10, just three shy of his career high of 13, en route to his second-career shutout. He surrendered a leadoff single through the left side in the first, an infield single in the fifth and a one-out double in the sixth in the seven-inning game.
At the plate, Mike Coffey and Matt McConnell each had three of the Roadrunners' 12 hits. McConnell also hit his sixth home run of the season and drove in four runs.
Chris Redding led off the game with a single and scored after stealing second base as Coffey, the game's second batter, doubled to right-center.
Metro State didn't score again until the sixth inning when Coffey led off with an infield single and McConnell followed with a two-run home run to center.
The Roadrunners added three insurance runs in the seventh, highlighted by a leadoff double by Marcel Dominguez and a two-run double by McConnell. Coffey later scored on an error.
Game 2:
Oredigger right hander Andrew Ryan shut down the Roadrunners, holding them to just five hits and one unearned run in the 5-1 loss. Ryan struck out five. Ryan Eccles took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs in five innings.
Tommy Frikken and Matt McConnell each had a double to lead the offense. Chris Redding, Dakota Nahm and Tyree Abshire each had base hits as well.
The Roadrunners scored their only run in the second inning after a leadoff single by Nahm. He later scored when Marcel Dominguez reached on an error by CSM's second baseman. Frikken then doubled to right, but Dominguez and Frikken were stranded as Ryan struck out Redding to end the inning.
Metro State threatened again in the third after a one-out double by McConnell, but a ground out and another strikeout put an end to the inning. The Roadrunners grounded into inning-ending double plays in the fourth and sixth.
Colorado Mines was led offensively by Elliott Riege, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning.
The two teams will meet for the series finale on Sunday in Golden with a 1 p.m. start for the nine-inning game.
