GOLDEN, Colo. - Metro State's baseball team earned a four-game series victory on Sunday, defeating Colorado School of Mines 7-4 in Golden. The Roadrunners took three-of-four games from the Orediggers and improved to 17-12 this season and 8-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Mines dropped to 6-23 overall and 3-13 in the RMAC.
Steven Green pitched the first five innings, striking out four and allowing just two runs to earn the win. Kyle Orgill pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out two for the save. Sean Walter pitched two shutout innings of relief as well.
Chris Redding led the offense, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Mike Coffey, Matt McConnell and Marcel Dominguez had Metro State's other three hits as the Roadrunners were limited to just five hits.
Metro State got on the board first as Jordan Stouffer and Dakota Nahm each reached on an error to start the second inning. Stouffer came home on a sacrifice fly to left by Tyree Abshire to put the Roadrunners in front 1-0.
The Orediggers tied the game in the bottom of the second with two singles and a walk.
The Roadrunners scored two more in the third after Tommy Frikken led off with a walk and Redding reached on a single. Coffey brought Frikken home with a sacrifice fly and McConnell drove Redding in with a single to right-center.
Metro State added to its lead in the fifth with two more to take a 5-1 lead on a two-run home run to center with nobody out by Redding that scored Frikken.
Mines got back in the game with a solo home run by Bryan Coday in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth against reliever Tony Weber to cut Metro State's lead to 5-4.
The Roadrunners pushed two insurance runs across in the eighth after a one-out double by Coffey and a trio of walks.
Walter pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth and Orgill retired the top of the Orediggers lineup in order in the ninth to earn the save.
Metro State will host Regis University for a four-game series beginning on Friday, March 27 at Auraria Field.
