Roadrunners Take Two from Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Metro State softball team scored 13 runs in the seventh inning to go on to an 18-2 win over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M. It was game one of a doubleheader.

Amber Roundtree, Tara Mickelson and Corrie Nishikida each had two hits to lead the offense. Lauren Hainlen added a home run. The Roadrunners drew 15 walks, just one shy of the school record.

Christie Robinson threw a complete game on the mound to earn the victory. She scattered six hits and struck out three.

Jennessa Tesone scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Hainlen. Highlands took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

Metro State tied the game in the fourth after Hainlen led off with a walk and scored on a single by Roundtree. The Roadrunners scored three in the fifth on an error, two walks and two hits.

The Roadrunners put the game away with 13 in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run by Hainlen and a triple by Nishikida.

GAME 2

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - No. 22 Metro State scored 10 runs in the second inning to cruise to a 12-0 victory over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday in game two of a doubleheader in Las Vegas, N.M. The Roadrunners improved to 14-4 overall and 7-1 in the RMAC, while NMH dropped to 4-15 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC.

Kellie Nishikida, Tara Mickelson, Danni Hedstrom and Jessica Haab each had two of Metro State's 11 hits. Haab also hit a home run, one of the Roadrunners' five extra-base hits. Meanwhile, freshman Brittany Moss tossed a three-hitter, pitching all five innings with three strikeouts.

Metro State scored two in the first inning as Amber Roundtree and Nishikida opened the game with back-to-back singles.

The Roadrunners broke the game wide open in the top of the second with 10 runs on eight hits. Metro State scored all of its runs on extra-base hits, including two-run doubles by Kellie Nishikida, Sarah Rusch and Corrie Nishikida, a two-run triple by Hedstrom and a two-run home run by Haab.

Moss allowed just two singles and a walk from that point on and cruised to the win.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday.
