Metro State Takes Two from Colorado Christian

PARKER, Colo. - The Metro State baseball team won game one of a doubleheader 11-10 against Colorado Christian on Sunday in Parker, Colo. The two teams combined for 40 hits in the game. The two teams were scheduled to play the doubleheader on Saturday, but snow and cold conditions forced it to be postponed.

Jordan Stouffer led the way, going 4-for-5 with a double. Mike Coffey had three hits, including two doubles and three RBI. Tyree Abshire and Brett Bowman also had three hits each. Abshire belted a solo home run in the fourth.

Sean Walter earned the victory on the mound, pitching three innings of relief and allowing two runs. He struck out two. Ross MacDonald earned the save.

Matt McConnell ripped a two-run home run in the top of the first to put Metro State ahead 2-0. CCU scored one in the bottom of the inning.

Colorado Christian had four players with three hits each, including Doug Pavlich who also homered in the contest. Nicholas Leader suffered the loss on the mound.

Metro State pushed another run across after a lead off double by Marcel Dominguez and an RBI single by Bowman. But the Cougars tied it with two runs off starter Ted Jamison in the bottom of the second.

Another lead off double, this time by Chris Redding and a run-scoring single by Stouffer put the Roadrunners in front 4-3 in the third. CCU quickly took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the third with three runs, highlighted by an RBI triple by Chris Guyer.

The Roadrunners bounced right back with three runs in the fourth, including a lead off home run by Abshire and doubles by Tommy Frikken and Mike Coffey.

They added another in the sixth when Frikken reached on a one-out bunt single and scored on another double to center by Coffey.

Metro State scored again the the seventh to take a 9-6 lead following a lead off single by Stouffer, who scored on a sacrifice fly three batters later by Dominguez.

CCU got two back in the bottom of the eighth to cut Metro State's lead to 9-8.

Stouffer led off the top of the ninth with a ground rule double and scored on a single to center by Abshire. Bowman later added an RBI single to put the Roadrunners up 11-8. A two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth by Pavlich made things uncomfortable for Roadrunner faithful, but closer MacDonald got a strike out to end the game.

GAME 2

PARKER, Colo. - The Metro State baseball team defeated Colorado Christian 8-6 in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday in Parker, Colo., to earn the sweep on the day and take three-out-of-four games in the series over the weekend. The win improves the Roadrunners to 13-8 overall and 4-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU drops to 8-12 overall and 2-6 in the RMAC.

Tyree Abshire came off the bench to hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to put Metro State ahead 7-4 and that proved to be the difference in the game. He entered the game defensively at catcher during the previous half inning.

Matt McConnell, Dakota Nahm and Kevin Caughlin each had two hits for Metro State. Abshire, Mike Coffey and Jordan Stouffer each homered for the Roadrunners.

Ryan Eccles earned the victory out of the bullpen and Ross MacDonald earned his second save of the day, getting the final two outs. MacDonald is now 3-0 this season with four saves in 10 appearances.

Chad Meske led the Cougars with three hits, while Brett Myatt had two hits, including a two-run home run. Bud Wilborn suffered the loss for CCU.

Metro State led 1-0 after a solo home run with one out in the first by Coffey. The Roadrunners added three more to take a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Chris Redding led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by McConnell. Stouffer blasted a solo shot to center for the second run of the inning. Nahm later scored on a base hit by Caughlin.

CCU tied the game with four runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run double by Mike Cavazos in the bottom of the third.

Both teams went scoreless until the sixth inning when Caughlin scored on a fielder's choice by Coffey to put Metro State ahead 5-4.

After two quick outs in the seventh inning, Brett Bowman singled to start a three-run rally. Abshire followed him with a two-run shot to left. Dominguez then singled and later stole home for an insurance run.

Eccles surrendered a one-out, two-run home run by Myatt, but MacDonald came in again to shut the door on the Cougars, allowing a walk before striking out consecutive batters to end the game.

The Roadrunners host New Mexico Highlands for a four-game series, beginning with one game on Friday, March 13.
