COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - No. 12 Metro State split a doubleheader on the road on Saturday with UC-Colorado Springs, winning game one 7-3, before losing 10-2 in five innings in game two. The loss in game two dropped the Roadrunners to 30-8 overall and 23-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS improved to 12-21 overall and 9-16 in the RMAC. The eight-run loss was the biggest losing margin Metro State has had in a game this season.
Game 1
Jennessa Tesone had three hits and Sarah Rusch homered twice to lead the Roadrunners to victory. Rusch and Corrie Nishikida each had two hits and Tara Mickelson also had a home run for Metro State. Christie Robinson earned the win, pitching all seven innings and striking out four.
The Roadrunners took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, as Mickelson brought home Amber Roundtree for the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Rusch belted a two-run home run to left-center one batter later for a 3-0 lead. Tesone later scored on a double by Nishikida.
UCCS scored one in the bottom of the first, but both teams were held scoreless for the next three innings. Each team scored a run in the fifth, including Rusch's second home run of the game for Metro State.
The Roadrunners stretched their lead to 7-2 in the seventh on a two-run home run by Mickelson with nobody out. The Mountain Lions scored one in the bottom of the seventh.
Game 2
UC-Colorado Springs pitcher Shelby Ballard held the Roadrunners to a season-low three hits in the loss. Amber Roundtree had two of those hits and Kellie Nishikida had the other.
Nishikida hit a two-run home run, two batters into the game that scored Roundtree for Metro State's only runs of the game. Metro State was held to just a leadoff double from Roundtree in the third inning from that point on.
Metro State travels to Nebraska-Kearney for a four-game series next weekend.
