PUEBLO, Colo. - The Metro State baseball team split a doubleheader with Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday on the road, winning game one 14-11, before falling 13-11 in game two. The Roadrunners are now 19-13 overall and 10-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSUP is 24-13 overall and 11-8 in the RMAC.
Game 1 Metro State had 18 hits, its third-highest total this season. Chris Redding and Jordan Stouffer each had four hits to lead the team. Tommy Frikken also had three hits. Matt McConnell and Tyree Abshire each had two hits and four runs batted in.
Sean Walter pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the victory. Kyle Orgill picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.
Redding led off the game with a double to right-center and scored two batters later on a ground out by McConnell. But CSU-Pueblo came back with three in the bottom of the first on three hits and a walk to take a 3-1 lead.
Four of the Thunderwolves' 21 hits in the game led to two more runs for the home team in the second.
Metro State cut CSUP's lead to 5-4 in the third inning. Frikken and Redding led off with back-to-back singles. Following a strike out, McConnell walked to load the bases. Stouffer then reached on an infield hit, scoring Frikken. Abshire ripped a two-run double to left to cap the scoring in the inning.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the fourth with the aid of a Thunderwolves' error as Marcel Dominguez scored on a single by Redding, but a CSUP home run in the bottom of the inning kept the Thunderwolves in front 7-5.
Metro State flexed its muscles in the fifth, taking an 8-7 lead. McConnell belted a home run to right to start the inning and Abshire hit a two-run shot two batters later that scored Stouffer.
Frikken led off the sixth with a walk and Redding hit a double to put runners on second and third. Frikken scored on a balk and Redding was brought home by a sacrifice fly by McConnell, stretching Metro State's lead to 10-7.
Metro State's bullpen faltered to start the sixth inning as it allowed the first four batters of the inning to reach via single, double, home run and walk. But Walter then entered the game, allowing a fly out, a base hit that gave the CSU-Pueblo an 11-10 lead, and a ending the inning on a 1-6-3 double play.
The Roadrunners wasted no time taking back the lead with four if their own in the top of the seventh to take a 14-11 lead. Metro State's first four batters reached, with a walk to Dakota Nahm, a single by Brennan Brown and back-to-back doubles by Dominguez and Frikken. Dominguez' shot to right field tied the game then brought home Brown to put Metro State in front. The Roadrunners scored their final run of the inning with two outs on another double, this time by McConnell.
Walter pitched two more scoreless innings, pitching around a single, a double and a walk in the eighth. Orgill allowed a one-out single in the ninth and finished the game with a strikeout.
Game 2
Metro State continued to hit well, belting 15 hits and scoring 11 runs, but CSU-Pueblo had 13 hits and scored 13 runs with the aid of three Roadrunner errors.
Chris Redding added three more hits in the second game, while Mike Coffey, Tyree Abshire, Marcel Dominguez and Tommy Frikken each had two hits. Dakota Nahm ripped his sixth home run of the season.
The Roadrunners led 3-0 in the top of the first, scoring two on a double by Jordan Stouffer and another on a base hit by Abshire. The Thunderwolves scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning and took an 8-3 lead in the third with six runs as eight consecutive batters reached base with one out.
Metro State cut the lead to 8-6 with three in the fourth. Kevin Coughlin hit a lead off double and scored on a single by Frikken. Redding hit and RBI single as well and scored later on an error.
CSU-Pueblo added a single run in the fourth. The Roadrunners tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the fifth with three runs after a lead off double by Abshire, a two-run Thunderwolves error and an RBI single by Frikken.
The Thunderwolves scored four in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 13-9 lead on four hits and three walks. The Roadrunners mounted a rally in the seventh with a lead off home run by Nahm. Dominguez reached on a one-out double and scored two batters later on a double by Redding. But a ground out to the mound ended the game.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a seven-inning game at noon in Pueblo.
