Metro State Eliminated from RMAC Tournament in Wild Finish

PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State-Pueblo scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally to defeat Metro State 11-10 and eliminate the Roadrunners from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday in Pueblo. Metro State's season will likely end as it was ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Central Region rankings and only the top-six make the NCAA Tournament. The Roadrunners have an overall record of 28-24, their second consecutive winning season.

Metro State trailed 8-7 heading into the ninth inning, but scored three runs in the top of the inning to take an 11-8 lead. The first five batters reached base to start the ninth for the Roadrunners with runs scoring on singles by Tommy Frikken (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) and Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) and a bases loaded walk to Matt McConnell (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson H.S.).

But the ThunderWolves tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run double by Jason Fobes. After an intentional walk, Zach Hoffman delivered a walk-off single through the left side to end the game.

Metro State trailed 4-1 after allowing four runs in the bottom of the second, but got back in the game with a two-out, two-run single by Brett Bowman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) in the fourth.

CSUP added a pair of runs in the fifth, but Bowman scored by the aid of a wild pitch and a balk in the sixth to keep the ThunderWolves' lead at 6-4. Each team scored a single run in its next half inning for a CSUP lead of 7-5 after seven innings.

The Roadrunners tied the game in the top of the eighth as Chris Redding and Coffey scored on a fielder's choice by Tyree Abshire (Paonia, Colo./Paonia H.S.), with Coffey scoring on an error on that play.

Again, CSU-Pueblo took the lead back with one in the bottom of the eighth to set up each team's rally in the ninth inning.

Redding and Bowman each had three htis to lead the Roadrunners. Coffey added two. Ted Jamison (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) suffered the loss, pitching into the ninth inning for Metro State.
