Martinez Nets Winner in Second Overtime over No. 24 CSU-Pueblo

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. -
Mike Martinez (Thornton, Colo./Horizon H.S.) scored his second overtime game-winning goal in just over a week as Metro State defeated No. 24 Colorado State-Pueblo 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday in Pueblo.  The win moved Metro State to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSUP dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC.

Martinez scored the game-winning goal in overtime at Western Washington on Thursday, Sept. 10.  His winner in the 109th minute on Sunday was scored nearly the exact same way as Steven Emory (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) served the ball up to Tyler Hambrick (Northglenn, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.), who dribbled and then found Martinez directly in front of the goal for the tap-in.

Pat Laughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) scored the first goal of the game less than a minute into the second half to give Metro State a 1-0 lead.  Laughlin received a pass from Ryan Baker (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) and dribbled and shot from near the top of the box.

Erik Andersen tied the game for the ThunderWolves with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute.  Metro State had four shots in the final four minutes of regulation, but one was blocked by a defender and the other three were saved by CSUP goalkeeper Chris Smith.

Tyler Keidel (Buena Vista, Colo./Salida H.S.) opened the first overtime with a shot that went wide less than two minutes into the period and Emory shot high three minutes later for the only shot attempts in the first overtime.  The Roadrunners did manage three corner kicks in the period.

Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) took a shot that went high in the 104th minute, but a counter-attack by the ThunderWolves led to a save for Metro State goalkeeper Dominique Griffith (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) just seconds later.  Laughlin nearly ended the game in the 108th minute with a shot that hit the post, but Martinez was in position for the winner less than a minute later.

Griffith made two saves for Metro State.  Martinez and Emory each led the Roadrunners with four shot attempts as Metro State outshot CSUP 19-7.

Sunday was Metro State's first win over a ranked team since defeating No. 24 Colorado Mines 2-0 at home on Oct. 17, 2008.  The last road win over a ranked team also came against CSM, a 2-1 win on last Sept. 14 when the Orediggers were ranked 17th.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday as it travels across town to face Regis at 4:30 p.m.
