DENVER, Colo. - Laura Leber punched in a loose ball off a corner kick in the 87th minute as No. 15 Minnesota State, Mankato stunned No. 3 Metro State 2-1 at Auraria Field on Friday evening. The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 2-1, while MSU improved to 3-0 this season. The loss also snapped a 20-game regular season unbeaten streak. The last team to beat Metro State during the regular season was MSU, Mankato on Aug. 28, 2008, a 3-2 overtime loss on the road.
The first half was slow with just six total shot attempts between the two teams. MSU's Brittany Henry opened the scoring in the 51st minute as the Mavericks jumped out to the lead early in the second half.
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) had a chance to tie the game in the 64th minute at 1-1 as her header off of
Gabby Klipp (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.)'s corner kick was headed for the net before MSU goalkeeper Shelia Reynold made a leaping save, deflecting it off the crossbar.
Klipp set up Metro State's only goal of the game 14 minutes later as she made a long pass into the center of the box to
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.), who then found
Aleah DeGeneres (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) on the right side for the game-tying goal.
MSU had all of the chances from there out, recording three shot attempts before Leber found the net with less than four minutes left.
Becca Maloney (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) made three saves for the Roadrunners.
Metro State will be back on the field on Sunday as it hosts Winona State (Minn.) at noon at Auraria Field.
