DENVER, Colo. - No. 16 Metro State completed a four-game sweep against Regis over the weekend with two wins on Sunday, topping the Rangers 9-0 in six innings in game one and winning 5-4 in game two. The games were supposed to be played at Regis, but poor field conditions moved the games to Metro State, though Regis remained the home team on the field.
The Roadrunners improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis fell to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in the RMAC. Metro State was the preseason favorite to win the RMAC and Regis was the preseason No. 2 in the East Division behind the Roadrunners.
Game One
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) was provided nine runs of support, though they were not needed as the junior improved to 4-0 on the season with a complete game shutout, scattering five hits and striking out eight. She did not allow a runner past second base in the game.
Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) provided Diehl with all of the runs she needed before Diehl stepped on the field, blasting a two-run home run to right-center in the top of the first, driving in
Sarah Rusch (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.), who doubled before Mickelson.
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) hit a one-out double in the fifth inning and later stole home on a double steal after Rusch took second base, putting Metro State in front 3-0.
The Roadrunners broke the game open in the sixth, scoring six times. The first four batters all reached base.
Jessica Haab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek H.S.) provided an RBI single and Roundtree hit a sacrifice fly for the first two runs. After
Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) scored on a wild pitch, Rusch drilled a three-run home run to left-center.
Rusch and Hedstrom each led the offense with two hits.
Game Two
Metro State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run homer to left-center by
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.).
Regis scored three times in the fourth, forcing Roadrunner starter
Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.) out of the game, but reliever
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) escaped the inning with minimal damage, despite a pair of errors in the inning. Nikki Haberkorn hit a two-run home run for the Rangers and Bianca Holley followed with a double to center off Robinson. Moss was brought in the game following an error by third baseman Mickelson that allowed pinch hitter Cassie Long to reach on a sacrifice bunt. Moss was greeted with a throwing error by Mickelson that allowed Breanna Backlund to reach on an infield hit and the error brought Holley in to put the Rangers up 3-2. Moss got one of the toughest outs in Division II softball as Alisa Heronema, who ended the day with a .548 batting average, grounded out sharply to second, holding Long at third base. Moss closed the inning with a strikeout of Shannon Massine.
The score remained until Haab ripped a two-out, two-run home run in the sixth inning to right field, putting Metro State back in front 4-3.
The Rangers answered right back, tying the game in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run. Moss ended the inning with a strikeout, stranding Heronema on third base and Natalie Adami on first.
Roundtree led off the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line and she advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.) then walked. After Nishikida stole second and Rusch struck out, Mickelson was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) delivered a bloop single to left, bringing in Roundtree from third to put Metro State ahead 5-4. The Roadrunners left the bases loaded as a strikeout and a pop out ended the inning.
Moss needed just nine pitches to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh as she earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run, and striking out four.
Metro State will continue conference play on Saturday at Mesa State with a doubleheader in Grand Junction.
