Long Balls Lead Roadrunners to Split

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. -
Metro State blasted three home runs in game one of a doubleheader at Colorado State-Pueblo to earn a split.  The Roadrunners took game one 7-4 in nine innings, but fell 9-2 in game two.  Both squads are 2-2 after a four-game non-conference series this weekend.

Game One
Metro State fell behind 4-0 and managed just two hits through four innings.  But a leadoff walk to Cody Henry (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) and a two-out RBI single by Chris Redding (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) got the Roadrunners on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.

After stranding two runners after Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.)'s leadoff double in the sixth, Metro State tied the game in the seventh to force extra innings.  Redding reached on a one-out infield single and a walk to Nick Columbia (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) set Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) up for the biggest hit in his two-day Metro State career.  The transfer from Lamar Community College blasted a three-run home run to left to tie the game at 4-4.

Reliever Ross MacDonald (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) put the game in cruise control after taking over for Jake Draeger (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.), who went six innings.  MacDonald pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh and held CSUP scoreless in the eighth, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam with a double play.

Krueger then ripped a one-out home run in the top of the ninth to put the Roadrunners in front for the first time in the game.  Following a walk to Stouffer, Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) connected on a two-run blast to left field as Metro State took a three-run lead.

MacDonald pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the win with three shutout innings of relief.

Redding, Krueger and Stouffer each had two hits to lead the offense.  Perry and David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) each had one hit.  Krueger drove in four runs with his two long balls.

Game Two
Metro State's bats were cooled by Juaquin Montano, who pitched a complete game for the ThunderWolves and struck out eight.  Perry suffered the loss on the mound, allowing six runs in 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.

Trailing 2-0, Metro State cut the lead in half after Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.)'s leadoff double in the third.  He came home on a base hit by Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.).

After CSUP added a run to make the score 3-1 in the bottom of the third, Columbia scored on a single to left by Kevin Coughlin (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.).  But that was it for the Roadrunners, who managed just a two-out double by Marcel Dominguez (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad H.S.) in the sixth after Coughlin's RBI single.

Metro State will host Dickinson State (N.D.) for a four-game series next weekend at Auraria Field.
