Roadrunners Crush Adams State to Open RMAC Season 11-0

ALAMOSA, Colo. -
The No. 9 Metro State softball team crushed Adams State 15-2 on the road on Sunday in game one, improving to a perfect 11-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 14-1 overall.  It is the best start to the conference season in school history and the best in the RMAC since Mesa State opened 2007 with 13 wins.  With the loss, ASC fell to 3-4 overall and in the RMAC after getting swept in three games this weekend by the Roadrunners.  Game two was canceled due to snow in Alamosa after ASC led 2-1 in the second inning.

Metro State took a 2-0 lead in the third as Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.) and Sarah Rusch (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.) hit back-to-back home runs with two outs.  The Grizzlies strung together three hits to push one across in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Rusch ripped an RBI single in the fifth and Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) came through with a two-run, two-out single two batters later to push the lead to 5-1.  ASC again scored one in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run off starter Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.).

The Roadrunners added four runs in the sixth on just one hit as they used three walks, a hit batter and an error.

Metro State put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with six runs.  Jessica Haab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek H.S.) crushed a one-out solo home run to start the scoring and the next six batters after her also reached, highlighted by an RBI double by Rusch and a two-run single by Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.).

Robinson allowed just one earned run while throwing all seven innings to earn the victory.  She surrendered just six hits and one walk.

Rusch was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and three runs scored.  Nishikida went 2-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs.  Tesone and Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) also had two hits each.

Metro State will return home to host a four-game series against Colorado State-Pueblo next weekend.
