DENVER, Colo. - The Metro State baseball team fell 19-6 at Regis on Wednesday in non-conference action. The Roadrunners dropped to 9-9 overall, while the Rangers improved to 9-9.
Metro State fell victim the long ball, surrendering six home runs in the nine-inning game, including three from catcher Pat Farrell. The Rangers also tagged the Roadrunners for 24 hits.
Zach Blakeley's three-run home run in the first inning put Regis ahead 3-0 and they led 4-0 after a double by Alex Haag and an RBI single by Gerard Mohrmann.
The Roadrunners had plenty of chances early, stranding two runners in a scoreless first inning and leaving a runner on in the second and third. They managed one run in the second after a one-out walk to
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) and a sacrifice fly by
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.).
In the fourth inning, Metro State left the bases loaded and trailed 10-1 after four innings. For the game, the Roadrunners left a season-high 15 runners on base.
Kevin Coughlin (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) led off the sixth inning with a pinch hit home run down the left field line to cut the lead to 10-2. But Regis put up six runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
The Roadrunners were able to string together a rally in the ninth inning. Following a strikeout to start the inning, five straight batters reached base.
Everett Altman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) connected on a double down the left field line and walked to
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) and Coughlin loaded the bases.
Anthony Sylvester (Morrison, Colo./D'Evelyn H.S.) delivered a two-run single and Trimble followed with an RBI single. Freshman
Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) later drove in a run with a base hit to right field, his first career hit at Metro State.
Tyler Hensen (Lakewood, Colo./Bishop Machebeuf H.S.) was the only Metro State pitcher to escape the game unscathed, tossing a scoreless sixth inning.
Sean Walter (Wiggins, Colo./Wiggins H.S.) suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs and 10 hits over 3.1 innings.
