DENVER, Colo. - No. 8 Metro State's
Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.) fired the eighth no-hitter in school history in game one and
Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) hit a walk-off home run in game two as the Roadrunners swept Colorado State-Pueblo on Sunday at home in Denver, winning 1-0 in game one and 6-4 in game two. The Roadrunners improved to 16-1 overall and 13-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the ThunderWolves dropped to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the RMAC. Both teams entered Sunday in first place in the RMAC in their respective divisions.
Game One
Robinson allowed just one ball out of the infield and came within two outs of the school's first perfect game in history, but settled for the no-hitter. The senior preseason RMAC Pitcher of the Year coaxed 11 ground ball outs and struck out six as she frustrated the CSU-Pueblo hitters all game. The only ball that left the infield was a lazy fly out to left field in the fourth inning.
Robinson previously had two one-hitters, but it was the first no-hitter of her Metro State career.
Two excellent defensive plays saved the perfect game in the sixth inning. Ashley Corrigan hit a weak pop up on the second pitch of the inning between third and the pitcher's circle. But Robinson made a diving catch near the foul line for the first out of the inning. The second batter Lindsey Marmolejo hit a sharp ground ball to second baseman
Sarah Rusch (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.)'s right. But Rusch made a sliding stop to her backhand side and threw the speedy Marmolejo out at first.
Robinson took the perfect game into the seventh after a called third strike ended the sixth. After getting a ground out to first base to open the seventh, Annalyse Garcia hit a soft line drive to the left of second base. Metro State shortstop
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) had the ball slip out of her glove as she tried to pick it up while running towards first base to make the throw as Garcia reached on an error. Robinson then got a fielder's choice to second base and a weak ground ball back to the mound as Robinson made the final out herself to end the game.
It was the first no-hitter since
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) threw a six-inning no-hitter on April 26 last season against Chadron State. Robinson's no-no was just the second seven-inning no-hitter in school history. Julie Kollman threw a seven-inning no-hitter in a 2-1 win against New Mexico Highlands on March 9, 1988.
Despite Robinson's effort, the Roadrunners barely won the game. They stranded four runners in scoring position in the first five innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the second.
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) reached on a two-out single to center in the sixth. Freshman
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) followed with double to left field that scored pinch runner
Kristen Gertner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) just moments before Robinson went out for her seventh inning.
Game Two
Moss tossed a gem of her own in game two, breaking the school's strikeout record by fanning 13 CSU-Pueblo hitters. However, she was overshadowed by another dramatic win as the Roadrunners scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and won on a walk-off home run by Mickelson.
Moss broke her own record of 11 strikeouts, set earlier this season against Regis on Feb. 27. At one point between the second and fourth innings, she struck out seven batters in a row and had eight consecutive outs via strikeout. But the ThunderWolves managed some clutch hits as Lacey Chesser delivered a two-run double with two outs in the fifth and hit an RBI triple with two outs in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 4-1.
After a pop out to the pitcher to start the bottom of the seventh inning,
Jessica Haab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek H.S.) reached on a double to left-center. Following a strikeout for the second out, Roundtree crushed a triple down the right field line to cut the lead to 4-2. After a walk to
Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.), Rusch reached on an error by the CSUP shortstop as she one-hopped her throw to first base, allowing Roundtree and Nishikida to score.
Mickelson then delivered a home run on an 0-1 pitch, crushing the ball well over the center field fence to win the game. It was the first game-winning walk-off home run for the Roadrunners since they reinstated the softball program in 2008 and the first walk-off game-winning hit since Roundtree's single against Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 5.
The two teams will meet again on Monday at Metro State for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
