DENVER, Colo. - Metro State's baseball continued to score runs in bunches on Saturday, winning 9-4 and 19-5 over Colorado Christian to sweep the three-game series over the Cougars.
Metro State won 34-12 on Friday in a game full of school and NCAA records.
After the series, Metro State sits at 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 6-11 overall and 0-6 in the RMAC. It's the best start in conference play in two years as the Roadrunners opened 2008 with a 9-1 start.
Game One
Jake Draeger (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) was outstanding on the mound for Metro State, tossing a career-high 7.1 innings, while allowing two earned runs and striking out four for his first win of the season.
Chris Redding (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) started his perfect Saturday with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including two doubles. He tied a single game school record with three doubles on Friday.
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) had two hits, including a solo home run and a run-scoring double.
Redding opened Metro State's half of the first by ripping the first pitch from Jeff Ross to the fence in right-center for a double. He came around on a passed ball after
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) advanced him to third on an infield hit.
The Roadrunners pushed two more across in the second after
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) led off with a triple to right-center and he scored on a bloop single down the right field line by
Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.). Lopez scored later in the inning on a balk.
After CCU added one in the top of the third, but Stouffer got that run right back with a line drive home run to left center with one out in the bottom of the inning to put the Roadrunners ahead 4-1.
Cody Henry (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) led off the fourth with a double and scored on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder.
Metro State led 7-1 after two more in the sixth. The Cougars finally got to Draeger in the eighth after a leadoff walk and an error led to two runs. Reliever
Tyler Hensen (Lakewood, Colo./Bishop Machebeuf H.S.) got the final two outs of the inning.
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) had an RBI single and Stouffer added an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth before CCU added one in the ninth on a solo home run by Doug Pavlich.
Game Two
Metro State's bats came alive again in game two as the Roadrunners led 14-0 after three innings.
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) drilled a three-run home run as they scored five times in the first. Stouffer ripped a two-run double and Krueger hit a two-run home run in a five-run second inning. Stouffer's grand slam in the third made the score 14-0.
CCU scored three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth, but Metro State got two back in the bottom of the fifth, one coming on a double by
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.).
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) drilled a three-run homer in the sixth for Metro State's final runs of the game.
Redding, Stouffer, Brown and Krueger each had two of the team's 13 hits in game two.
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) earned the victory, throwing the first five innings.
Tony Weber (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth H.S.) and
Ross MacDonald (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Metro State will host Regis for a nine-inning game at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
