DENVER, Colo. -
The No. 4 Metro State softball team swept UC-Colorado Springs 8-0 in five innings and 12-0 in five innings at home on Saturday.  Metro State improved to 26-3 overall, including 22-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 11-23 overall and 8-17 in the RMAC.

It was the first back-to-back shutouts for the Roadrunners since April 14, 1990, when Metro State defeated Colorado Mines 31-0 and 11-0.

Game One
Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.) fired her second consecutive shutout, throwing all five innings, while allowing just three hits, no walks and striking out four.

Jessica Haab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek H.S.) was a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run and a double and drove in three runs.  Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) and Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) each had two hits as well.  Roundtree also homered.

Haab started the scoring in the bottom of the second, amidst some controversy.  With a full count on Haab and one out, Tesone was called for leaving first base early.  Haab swung at the pitch and lined out to third and with Tesone standing on second, would have made an easy double play for the Mountain Lions.  But with Tesone called out automatically, the play was called no pitch.  Haab hit the next pitch over the right field fence to put Metro State up 1-0.

The Roadrunners added two in the second after a leadoff single by Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) down the third base line.  Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) reached on a bunt single as she beat out a sacrifice attempt, putting runners on first and second with nobody out.  Pinch runner Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) stole third on a double steal and scored when the throw sailed into left field.  Hedstrom came home on a ground out by Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.).

Haab drove in Jesse Minch (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) in the fourth with a one-out double to center.

Roundtree led off the fifth with a home run to left.  After Nishikida reached on an error, Sarah Rusch (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.) cracked a double to right-center to put runners on second and third with nobody out.  Mickelson struck out for the first out, but that was the final out of the game as Tesone hit a two-run double to left-center and Haab brought Tesone home with a base hit up the middle to end the game on the mercy rule.

Game Two
Rusch was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, as Metro State pounded out 12 hits in four innings at the plate.

Haab and Mickelson joined Rusch by all hitting home runs in the game.

Rusch drove in the first run with a single down the right field line that scored Roundtree.  Mickelson followed with a two-run home run to center for a 3-0 lead.

Haab led off the third with a home run to center.  Roundtree drove in a run with a single and Rusch later added a three-run homer in a six-run third inning.

Clark drove in Maul with her second double of the game in the fourth and Nishikida later hit an RBI single and Roundtree scored on a passed ball for the final run of the game.

Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) was lights-out on in the pitcher's circle, allowing three hits and two walks, while striking out six.

The Mountain Lions were without an extra-base hit in either game on Saturday.  Both squads meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader at Metro State beginning at 11 a.m.
