DENVER, Colo. - No. 12 New Mexico Highlands scored eight runs in the final four innings to rally for a 10-3 victory at Metro State on Friday. The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 20-20 overall and 17-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cowboys improved to 34-9 overall and 24-5 in the RMAC.
Starter
Ted Jamison (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) battled control problems, but escaped five innings with just two runs allowed as he limited NMHU to three hits. Jamison walked five and hit another, throwing just 47 of his 101 pitches for strikes.
He pitched around a one-out bloop double down the left field line in the first inning and the Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) in the bottom of the first.
Jamison surrendered a leadoff home run in the second inning, a ball that appeared to be a flyout off the bat, but with wind blowing in from left, it pushed the fly ball towards the foul pole and it hooked just inside the pole. Jamison walked the bases loaded in the third, but got out of the two-out jam with a line out to center.
Meanwhile Cowboys righthander Drew Vassil was cruising, tossing a 1-2-3 third inning and overcoming a leadoff walk in the fourth.
A leadoff walk in the fifth scored for Highlands, putting the Cowboys up 2-1.
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.) reached on a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning and the Roadrunners went in front 3-2 with a two-run home run by
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) with two outs.
But that was it for the Roadrunners offensively as Vassil threw 8.1 innings, allowing seven hits to improve to 12-1 on the season. Metro State handed him his only loss of the year earlier this season.
Reliever
Sean Walter (Wiggins, Colo./Wiggins H.S.) allowed a walk to start the sixth inning and NMHU went ahead 4-3 one batter later on a two-run blast by Phillip Rodriguez. Highlands added another in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at Metro State on Saturday, beginning at noon.
