KEARNEY, Neb. - Metro State tied a season-high with 15 runners left on base as the Roadrunners fell on the road at Nebraska-Kearney 10-3 on Friday. The loss dropped Metro State to 15-15 overall and 12-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UNK improved to 21-14 overall and 10-10 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners left the bases loaded in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings and left at least one runner on in every inning as they were just 4-for-23 with runners in scoring position on Friday. Metro State had 13 hits, led by
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.) with three and
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.),
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.),
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) and
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) with two each.
Starter
Ted Jamison (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) did not get out of the fifth inning, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss. UNK starter Jared Loschen improved to 7-3 on the season despite allowing 11 hits and four walks in 7.1 innings. He surrendered just three runs and struck out seven.
The Lopers took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, highlighted by Blake Cover's RBI double with nobody out. A double play ended Metro State's top half of the first as
Chris Redding (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) was stranded on second after a leadoff walk. The Roadrunners also stranded leadoff baserunners in the second and third.
Stouffer led off the fourth with a double to left and scored two batters later on a single to center by Coffey to cut the lead to 3-1. But Metro State stranded a two-out double by
Cody Henry (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.), followed by a single by Kaplan and a hit batter that allowed Trimble to reach.
UNK scored an unearned run in the fourth.
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, scoring Stouffer to cut the lead to 4-3. But the Lopers pushed across two more unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to maintain a three-run lead.
Nebraska-Kearney added three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The two teams will meet on Saturday for two seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. (CDT) at Memorial Field in Kearney.
