CHADRON, Neb. - The No. 5 Metro State softball team swept Chadron State on Saturday to break the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record for conference wins in a season with its 35th RMAC victory. The Roadrunners took game one 7-1 and game two 9-0 in six innings to improve to 38-3 overall and 35-2 in the RMAC, while the Eagles dropped to 24-26 overall and 18-19 in the RMAC.
The previous record for RMAC wins in a season was 34 by Regis University in 2006 when the Rangers went 34-2 (.944). With two wins on Sunday, Metro State can secure the best winning percentage in a season in the RMAC of team with 30 or more games played. Nebraska-Kearney, playing a much shorter conference schedule, went 26-0 in 1999. Regis' .944 winning percentage in 2006 is the best of a team playing a 30+ game schedule.
Game One
It was business as usual for righthander
Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.), who allowed just one unearned run in seven innings for the win. The Preseason RMAC Pitcher of the Year scattered five hits and walked just one. In her past 10 starts, Robinson has a 0.12 ERA, allowing one earned run in 59.0 innings with just 42 hits and six walks for a 10-0 record. She has six shutouts during that stretch.
Metro State used four walks in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead without the aid of a base hit. Four of the team's first five batters walked and
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.)'s walk forced in a run and the second run came on a groundout by
Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.).
The Roadrunners left a pair of runners on in the second and third innings, but
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.),
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) and
Sarah Rusch (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.) hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning with one out.
Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) later scored on a single by Nishikida to put the Roadrunners in front 6-0.
Roundtree doubled in the fifth with one out and she scored on a bases loaded walk to Mickelson for a seven-run lead.
The Eagles finally got on the board in the sixth as Katie Bolin doubled and scored with the aid of an error on a fielder's choice by Jamie Mazankowski with two outs.
Robinson pitched a perfect seventh inning to secure the win. Tesone led Metro State with three hits and Roundtree and Clark each had two.
Game Two
Metro State crushed 14 hits and used four errors in the 9-0 rout in six innings. Six players had multi-hit games for the Roadrunners, led by Roundtree and Tesone with three each and Clark, Rusch, Mickelson and Nishikida with two apiece.
Roundtree opened game two with a double and scored on an error by the shortstop two batters later as Metro State led 1-0.
Rusch ripped a two-run home run in the third, scoring Roundtree, for a 3-0 lead.
The Roadrunners added an unearned run in the fourth as Clark drove in
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) with a single to left.
Nishikida's single to center in the fifth scored pinch runner
Kristen Gertner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) for the team's fifth run.
Metro State put the game away in the sixth with four runs. Roundtree and Clark opened the inning with back-to-back singles and scored on a three-run home run to center by Rusch, her second of the game and third of the day. Mickelson followed with a blast of her own. The Roadrunners put two more baserunners on in the inning, but failed to add to the lead.
Brittany Moss (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) tossed six innings for her second shutout of the season. She scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
The two teams will meet again for two games on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
