CHADRON, Neb. - No. 5 Metro State swept Chadron State 6-5 and 14-2 (5 innings) on Sunday on the road to reach 40 wins for the second consecutive year and the second time in school history. The Roadrunners also extended their winning streak to a school record 16 games and finish the regular season with a 40-3 overall record, including 37-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CSC finishes the regular season 24-28 and 18-21 in the RMAC.
Metro State broke its previous record of 14 consecutive wins set earlier this season. The Roadrunners finished 2009 with a record of 40-12.
Game One
Metro State made four errors, nearly costing them a chance at the winning streak record.
Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.) was outstanding as usual. She surrendered just four hits and did not walk a batter, but the errors handed the Eagles five unearned runs. Robinson continued her hot streak, lowering her ERA in her past 11 starts/appearances to 0.11, with just one earned run in 66.0 innings. She is 11-0 during that stretch.
The Roadrunners took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) connected for a two-run home run with two outs, scoring
Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.). It was Hainlen's first home run since March 13 at Adams State.
Two errors allowed the first two CSC batters to reach in the bottom of the second and Allison Hendrickson came across on a groundout for the second out of the inning, cutting the lead in half.
The Eagles tied the game in the third after another error opened the inning.
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.)'s solo home run in the fourth put the Roadrunners back in front 3-2, but the lead did not last for long. Another error stretched the bottom of the inning four batters too long. Robinson should have been out of the inning after retiring the first and third batters of the inning, but an error allowed Blair McEndaffer to reach as the second batter of the inning. Following a bunt single by No. 9 hitter Katelyn Moore, Cassie Humphrey ripped a three-run home run to put the Eagles in front 5-3. It was the first home run Robinson allowed since March 7 at Mesa State, a span of 97 1/3 innings.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the fifth with a pair of their own unearned runs as
Sarah Rusch (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.) reached on an error with two outs and
Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) followed with a two-run home run.
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.)'s leadoff home run in the seventh gave Metro State the lead and Robinson retired the final 10 batters she faced to seal the victory.
Diehl led Metro State with two hits.
Game Two
Metro State set the tone early in game two, scoring five times and sending 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first.
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) was hit by a pitch to open the game and advanced to third on a double by Clark. Mickelson hit a sacrifice fly with one out to bring in the first run of the game, but the next six batters reached, as
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) ripped a two-run home run, Diehl had an RBI single and Hainlen ripped an RBI double.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the first from Diehl in the pitcher's circle, the offense was back at it with six runs as the Roadrunners again sent 11 batters to the plate. Rusch opened the inning with a home run to left. Seven consecutive batters reached after the first out, with RBI singles coming from
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.), Hainlen and Roundtree.
Metro State led 11-0 after the top of the third as
Danni Hedstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) hit a one-out single and Diehl hit another home run.
CSC finally got its first earned run of the four-game series in the bottom of the third, scoring twice, with one being earned on a two-run home run by Humphrey.
Mickelson led off the fifth with a home run and Diehl retired the final eight Eagles hitters.
Diehl threw all five innings, allowing two hits without a walk. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with four runs batted in. Tesone, Nishikida, Maul and Hainlen each had two hits as well.
Metro State will find out its first round opponent on Sunday night for Thursday's RMAC Tournament game at 12:30 p.m. at home.
