DENVER, Colo. - No. 4 Metro State rolled past Colorado Mines 11-2 in five innings on Friday in the loser's bracket of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament at Regis University. The Roadrunners improved to 43-4 overall this season, while CSM finished its season at 24-26.
Christie Robinson (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey H.S.), coming off her roughest outing of the season, allowed one earned run in five innings to improve to 20-2 this season. She allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter.
After Robinson fired two perfect innings and Metro State left the bases loaded in the first, the Roadrunners exploded for eight runs on five hits as 12 batters came to the plate in the bottom of the second.
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) drove in the first run of the game, hitting a ground ball to shortstop and reaching on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded when the Orediggers failed to record an out on the play. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning,
Tara Mickelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) ripped a bases clearing double to push the lead to 4-0.
Kellie Nishikida (Pearl City, Hawaii/Pearl City H.S.) and
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) later hit back-to-back doubles.
Mines scored an unearned run in the third and Molly Thiebaut scored on Lauren Aberle's one-out double in the fourth for the Orediggers' only two runs.
Nishikida hit an RBI double in the fourth with nobody out and she and Maul later scored for the final runs of the game.
Metro State will host Regis at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The winner will advance to the championship game to face Mesa State at 12:30 p.m. If Mesa State loses the 12:30 game, another championship game will be played at 3:30 p.m.
