DENVER -
Gibson Bardsley volleyed a through ball from teammate Darragh Simm into the net in the 83rd minute to give Western Washington to a 2-1 upset on the road at No. 20 Metro State on Sunday.  The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 3-1 this season, while the Vikings improved to 2-1-1.

Metro State played catch up for the majority of the game after falling behind 1-0 in the 35th minute when Andrew Weishaar deflected Oscar Jimenez's free kick past Roadrunner goalkeeper Dominique Griffith (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.).

Griffith made a number of spectacular saves in the first half.  Perhaps his best save came on a free kick from Jimenez in the 15th minute as Griffith leaped to prevent the ball from going in the upper right corner and deflected it out for a corner kick.  He also stopped Bardsley in the 26th minute with a diving stop on a 1v1 inside the box from the right side.

Meanwhile, Metro State had plenty of scoring chances in the first half.  Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.)'s goal just 6:20 into the game was erased when he was whistled for an unlucky hand ball.  Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) set up Steven Emory (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins H.S.) in the middle of the box with a cross from the right side, but Emory's shot went straight at goalkeeper Christian Warman, who made fifth save of the half on the shot in the 41st minute.

Metro State came out firing in the second half and out-shot the Vikings 19-8 in the second half.  Emory finally put one past Warman in the 76th minute as he dribbled through a pair of defenders and ripped a shot from 25 yards out at the top of the box.

The Roadrunners continued to control play, but a couple of mistakes on a ball gave WWU possession deep in Metro State territory and allowed Bardsley to beat Griffith, lobbing the shot over the charging goalkeeper from the left side.

Metro State was unable to sustain an attack after the goal.

Griffith made five saves, including three in the first half.  Warman stopped 10 for the Vikings.  Metro State out-shot WWU 29-15 in the game.

The Roadrunners will look to regroup against UC-Colorado Springs at 3:30 p.m. on Friday as they open the conference season at home.
