Women's Basketball Earns Win Behind Bratton's 17

DENVER - No. 11 Metro State cruised to a 73-53 victory over Western New Mexico on Friday in a battle between the first-and-last-place teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Roadrunners improved to 23-1 overall and 19-1 in the RMAC, while WNMU fell to 1-23 and 1-19.

Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) led three players in double figures with 17 points and eight rebounds, hittng 7-of-9 from the floor.  Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) buried four 3-pointers for 12 points off the bench, her second straight four-3 pointer performance.  Tawny Drexler (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) also scored 10 points and had seven rebounds, hitting 4-of-4 at the line and 3-of-5 from the floor. It was Drexler's first game in double digits since Dec. 18 against Regis.

Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) also scored nine points and had four assists as the Roadrunners dished out a season-high 25 assists.

Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) inched closer to the first triple-double in school history with nine assists to tie a career high, along with eight points and eight rebounds.  She also had three steals and two blocked shots.

It was all Metro State from the opening tip as the Roadrunners jumped out to an 18-4 lead after just six minutes of play.  A last second 3-pointer by the Mustangs cut the halftime lead to 39-26.

Metro State never led by more than 20 points in the second half and actually had its lead trimmed to 11 at 63-52 with 4:31 left.  But a 10-1 run to end the game pushed the margin back to 20 at the final buzzer.

The Roadrunners will host New Mexico Highlands at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
