DENVER - Metro State hit three home runs in game one as the host Roadrunners earned a split with Colorado Mines on Saturday, winning 5-1 and falling 4-1 in game two. Metro State is now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM is 6-10 and 1-1.
Game One
Lauren Hainlen (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.),
Molly Clark (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) and
Jennessa Tesone (Longmont, Colo./Niwot H.S.) each hit home runs, accounting for all five runs in the 5-1 victory.
Julia Diehl (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) also had a strong pitching performance, allowing one unearned run in seven innings, while scattering five hits.
The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out home run by Hainlen to left-center.
Clark blasted her home run to center field to lead off the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
Mines cut the lead in half in the fifth after an error started the inning and Alyson Beck scored on a double play later in the inning.
Brittney Padilla (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Central H.S.) led off the bottom half of the inning with a double to right field. After two outs, Clark was hit by a pitch and Tesone blasted a towering home run down the left field line after fouling off three two-strike pitches.
Diehl pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning and pitched around a two-out single in the seventh, ending the game with her third strikeout.
Game Two
Metro State committed two errors in the first inning, leading to two Oredigger runs to fall behind early. Metro State got one back in the bottom of the inning as
Amber Roundtree (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) scored on a groundout by Tesone.
Mines added another in the top of the third on a one-out home run by Macy Jones, taking a 3-1 lead.
The Orediggers led 4-1 in the fourth after putting together three straight singles and a sacrifice fly.
The Roadrunners appeared to cut the lead to two after Hainlen led off with a home run, but the home plate umpire ruled that the ball did not go over the fence and called a ground rule double. Hainlen was stranded on second to end the inning.
Aubree Maul (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) suffered the loss, striking out four and allowing two earned runs in seven innings.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday with a doubleheader at Metro State starting at 11 a.m.
