DENVER - Metro State split a baseball doubleheader at Regis University on Sunday, falling 12-5 in game one, before rebounding with a 12-5 win of its own. The Roadrunners are 3-1 in non-conference play and Regis is now 2-4.
Game One
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third,
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) drove in
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) to tie the game with a sacrifice fly. The Roadrunners added another in the fourth after a leadoff single by
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and an RBI single by
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.).
Regis took the lead back with two in the bottom of the fifth, but again Metro State came back to even the score with a sacrifice fly by Stouffer that scored
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.). Metro State added another in the sixth as Krueger scored on Kaplan's double to left.
Regis broke through for three in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. Metro State added its final run in the top of the ninth after a leadoff double by Coffey scored on a single up the middle by
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.).
Corey Collins (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings. Offensively, Coffey and Kaplan each had three hits and Krueger and Fox added two each.
Game Two
Metro State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the seven-inning game on a base hit to right by Coffey. The Roadrunners scored eight unearned runs in the fifth on two hits, three errors and four walks. Coffey had a two-run double and Kaplan also had an RBI single.
Metro State scored three more times in the sixth after three straight doubles by
Ty Hancock (Winslow, Ariz./Winslow H.S.), Fox and Stouffer led off the inning.
Regis finally got to starter
Zach Cleveland (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) in the bottom of the sixth, erasing his shutout with three runs on four singles. The Rangers scored twice against the bullpen in the seventh.
Cleveland struck out six in his first Metro State start.
Offensively, Coffey, Fox and Stouffer each had two hits. Fox extended his hitting streak to 17 games, just two shy of his career high.
Metro State opens its conference season next weekend at Mesa State.
